For most PT/OT’s, there are several reasons why they say they struggle to change patient lives:

  1. Not enough time
  2. Too much pressure to meet insurance rules
  3. Decreasing reimbursement
  4. Patient’s don’t want to pay enough
  5. Staff don’t care enough
  6. Patient’s don’t want to change
  7. I don’t want to preach
  8. That’s not my job

And more.

All of these reasons (as valid as they may seem), are either misconceptions or excuses that can be overcome.

Here are a few secrets:

There are 3 concepts that most therapists never think about that is essential to changing patient lives. And it doesn’t have much to do with time or insurance at all.

There is a deeply rooted barrier that afflict many but can be removed to enable therapists to make greater impact on patients. And one doesn’t have to be outgoing or charming to change lives.

There are 3 changes therapists need to make in their treatment sessions, and when they do, it dramatically increases their impact on patient impressions and lives.

And lastly, unless you provide specific training to staff they may actually turn patients off causing early drop-off, no-shows and cancels.

The #1 reason WHY I went into physical therapy versus medicine is because I wanted to change lives versus push pills.

So I’ve dissected this topic because this is so important to me as a physical therapist who wants to have purpose in what I do.

I mean come on, we spend over 40-hours per week (more than 1/3 of my life) at it so I want it to mean something, right?

I’m not just doing it for the paycheck (if I wanted to merely make money, there are much easier ways to do it.)

So that’s why I’m doing this training.

In my research, I’ve come to understand many things about patients, expectations, needs, wants and dynamics of changing lives.

Here’s just one of many patients whose life was changed with this understanding.

(He starts out by saying I “saved” his life but later you’ll see what he means.)

One quick tip,…
