IndeFree Association was founded by James Ko, MPT, CFA, in 1997.

He had just graduated in 1996 and began working as a licensed physical therapist.  It wasn't long before he became unhappy with the working conditions.  He believed therapists, for what they do and know, should earn more respect and get better pay.

His dissatisfaction inspired him to begin his own private practice in search of creating a better environment for himself.  He knew he could do it better than the way it was being done.

Needless to say he faced many challenges as he was a new graduate with little experience in treating patients or running a business.  So his practice and he suffered.  Phone calls to the APTA were met with no response.  Former professors and instructors were visited in order to gain advice but lead to little help.  He proceeded to visit other therapists who were already practicing in their own business but they were suspicious, uncooperative and unhelpful.  He soon became very disappointed.

On a hot summer day while he was going door-to-door to physician offices, things got pretty low.  Being treated as a lowly salesman by receptionists, he vowed that he would find a better way to build a successful private practice.  He also vowed that when he figured out how to succeed as a physical therapist, in business, he would NOT keep it for himself but teach everyone.

So, the birth of IndeFree had come.  "IndeFree" stands for "independence" and "freedom".  The two goals the association helps its members achieve.
